12 Months’ Reminiscence

For many years each Christmas I bestowed on my husband a photo calendar of the upcoming year. The calendar was filled with quotes and family photos and he eagerly anticipated the arrival of the year ahead in wisdom and memories. Not only did it serve as a log of daily appointments and scheduling, but also as a reminder of the joys and forces that were the focus of his personal life.

The calendars are now stacked in the cupboard with other memorabilia. I had occasion recently to grab one, as I needed a quick reference of family birthdays and anniversaries. The past few years such dates have gone into the electronic calendar, but I’m still having trouble believing my smartphone, so I wanted the reliable record.

I did quickly get the dates I needed. Once this accomplished I treasured may calendar a while longer. With each month I had added a quote and highlighted photos of family members with birthdays this month, or events particular to the year past.

The quotes, then as now, resonate for all times. I created calendars for many years. I stopped four or five years ago but perhaps it would again be a worthy endeavor.

With no calendar for this year however, here are my efforts from a few years back: (baker’s dozen with the cover)

  • To everything there is a season and a time for every purpose. – the Byrds
  • Associate yourself with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation, for ’tis better to be alone than in bad company. – George Washington
  • A woman’s guess is much more accurate than a man’s certainty. – Rudyard Kipling
(Well yes, I am partial to this one.)
  • Heading down a new path almost always unearths something worth finding.
    Pat Griskus Tri
  • Prediction is very difficult, especially if it’s about the future. – Niels Bohr
    (Every day even now!)
  • Bid me run run, and I will strive with things impossible. – Julius Caesar, Shakespeare
  • Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such. – Henry Miller
(Difficult to remember some days, but a worthwhile adage.)
  • It turns out that the best way to stop being depressed about changes in your life isn’t to just escape and forget everything – it’s to come alive and fall in love with something new, where there is excitement and drama and challenge. – Louis Cinquino
(Yes, even in new bread recipes.)
  • Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a Heaven for? – Robert Browning
  • Two roads diverged … I took the one less travelled. – Robert Frost
  • Keep your face always toward the sunshine – and shadows will fall behind you. – Walt Whitman
  • Do I contradict myself? Very well, then, I contradict myself; I am large — I contain multitudes. – Walt Whitman
    November
  • The ordinary acts we practice every day at home are of more importance to the soul than their simplicity might suggest – Thomas Moore.
(Remember to nurture the soul daily.)

Let us hope 2021 can bring a multitude of happy memories and delightful quotables for the 2022 edition.
